The Giants’ will probably have to make some trades if they want more picks It looks like the New York Giants will have to make due with just six selections in the 2021 NFL Draft.
OverTheCap’s Nick Korte released his final projection for compensatory picks on Monday afternoon, and the Giants were completely absent from the list.
The NFL allots compensatory picks based on the discrepancy between a team’s free agent departures and free agent signings. For instance, both the New England Patriots and Los Angeles Chargers netted extra third round picks after the loss of Tom Brady ($27.375 million) and Philip Rivers ($25 million), respectively.
With that in mind, the Giants not receiving any compensatory picks shouldn’t really be much of a surprise. After all, the Giants didn’t lose anyone of note in free agency and made several big signings. On the flip side of the coin, two of those signings, Blake Martinez and Kyler Fackrell, could potentially Collapse

Martinez had outstanding season, but the spot next to him was ever-chaning The inside linebacker position was at once a symbol of the advancement the New York Giants made in 2020 and of how defensive coordinator Patrick Graham mixed and matched to work around certain talent deficiencies.
Blake Martinez played at an All-Pro level after signing a free agent deal last offseason. The other inside linebacker spot was a revolving door. Let’s go player-by-player through the position.

Martinez was the on-field brains of a schematically-diverse and ever-changing Giants defense. He gave the Giants both the best defensive quarterback and best player at inside linebacker — yes, they are different things — since the heyday of Antonio Pierce.

Let’s review the players who filled edge roles for the Giants in 2020 From the beginning of the 2020 season to the end, the edge position underwent a complete transformation for the New York Giants.
Lorenzo Carter and Oshane Ximines were lost to injuries. Markus Golden was traded. Kyler Fackrell missed time toward the end of the year due to injury.
By season’s end, Jabaal Sheard, Carter Coughlin, Cam Brown, Niko Lalos and even inside linebackers David Mayo and Tae Crowder were finding snaps on the edge.
The Giants received adequate play overall, but it’s apparent the defense would really benefit from the addition of a truly dynamic edge defender. Let’s look at the key players at the position for the Giants in 2020.

Nick Falato takes us around the NFL Here we are, entering the conference championship games in the year 2021. Just a few short months ago, there was a ton of uncertainty around the likelihood of the season’s existence, but remarkably the NFL didn’t have to miss a game due to COVID-19.
The divisional round was entertaining. The Bills advanced to the conference championship for the first time since 1994 after defeating the Ravens 17-3. Green Bay beat Los Angeles in the cold of Lambeau Field 32-18. The Chiefs narrowly defeated the Browns 22-17 after Pat Mahomes left the game with an injury, and Tom Brady will play in his 14th conference championship game after the Buccaneers defeated the Saints 30-20.
Brady has been in the NFC for a season and has already brought his team to the conference championship. Defeating the red hot Green Bay Packers in the frigid cold will be a difficult task, but Buccaneers’ star defensive lineman Vita Vea may Collapse

The Giants could use depth, and maybe a new starter, on their offensive line Every NFL team has to navigate a delicate balancing act when building their offensive line. The easiest way to acquire talent is to use high draft picks and sign top free agents. But doing so again and again could well lead to a roster which is unbalanced and a salary cap situation which is untenable.
The other, more difficult, route is to find and coach up under-the-radar prospects with the traits to start. That could give you solid depth in the short term and a low-cost starter in the intermediate and long terms — as well as allow the team to use premium resources to address other positions.
The New York Giants have tried both tactics in recent years with decidedly... mixed success.
The trick to pulling off the second method to building an offensive line, one employed by the Green Bay Packers to solid success with players like David Bakhtiari, is identifying Collapse

Thus, the likelihood Garrett will return for a second season as Giants offensive coordinator has increased. Tony Racioppi and Mark Schofield recently told us why they believe that is a good thing:

15 HRS AGO - Robert Deutsch-USA TODAY Sports
Giants’ defensive lineman No. 3 on ESPN’s list of available free agents Leonard Williams is going to make a lot of money this offseason. New York Giants fans knew that already, as the 26-year-old Williams heads to free agency after a year in which he set career bests in sacks (11.5), tackles for loss (14) and quarterback hits (30).
The fact that Williams is perceived as the top defensive lineman entering the free agent market is becoming clearer. The Athletic ranked Williams as No. 4 on its list of pending free agents, a list released just after the New Year. Now, ESPN has ranked Williams No. 3 on its lists of 2021 free agents [Insider only].
ESPN writes that Williams has “enormous leverage” over the Giants, which is certainly true. It’s hard to imagine Williams, who earned $16.126 million on the franchise tag in 2020, coming out of free agency with a deal that does not make him one of the league’s 10 highest-paid defensive linemen. That means Collapse

19 HRS AGO - Joe Nicholson-USA TODAY Sports
What to make of the Giants’ running back position heading into 2021? It took a while, but the New York Giants finally found their offensive identity in the second half of the 2020 NFL season.
While their offense remained anemic and struggled to put points on the board, they found success running the ball. The combination of improvement along the offensive line, some schematic changes, and the emergence of Wayne Gallman Jr. gave the Giants the kind of consistency on the ground
However, the running game could be changing again in 2021. Saquon Barkley is due back from the torn ACL he suffered in week two, while Gallman could depart via free agency.
Joe DeLeone, Nick Falato, and I got together to discuss our takeaways from the running backs in 2020, as well as our projections for the position heading into 2021.

1 DAY AGO - Photo by Grant Halverson/Getty Images
Could Javonte Williams be the surprise star from this year’s draft class? It’s somewhat remarkable, and ironic, that we are living through a second golden age of running backs in the NFL. The college ranks are producing very talented runners at a remarkable clip, and they are producing early in their NFL careers.
University of North Carolina running back Javonte Williams isn’t the most heralded runner in the upcoming draft, but that could change over the coming months. Williams exploded onto the scene this year with a dominant performance that saw him average nearly 8 yards per carry and pick up 23 total touchdowns.
He is also a hard running player who could be an option if the New York Giants choose to allow Wayne Gallman Jr. exit in free agency.

Jerry Panza asks: I see the Giants just inked two reserve / future T.E.’s Nakia Griffin-Stewart and Nate Wieting The two-part TE question I have is why would the Giants even consider giving Evan Engram any more time to show he is what we all believed he would be for the Giants. Clearly he is at best a fast runner. He can’t block and well, he has not been very good at catching passes. I for one have seen as much as I can take with Engram. So he goes somewhere and does well, so be it if he does. I wish him well and to have success. But I think his Giants clock has run out. Also I’m wondering if the Giants should also cut their losses and jettison Levine Toilolo and just move on having just signed these two young TEs.

Here are the headlines from around the division from this past week Though the 2020 NFL season is moving along at full speed into the playoffs, life in the NFC East has slowed down as this mark’s the first notebook of the offseason.
But off the field, there is still plenty to talk about around the division as coaching changes begin to impact each team.
The most notable one of this past week was the Philadelphia Eagles’ firing of Doug Pederson after five seasons with the team. He posted a 42-37-1 record during his time in Philly. This past season, the Eagles finished in last place in the NFC East with a 4-11-1 record. It was the worst season in Pederson’s tenure with the Eagles.
For some, the move was surprising considering the fact that Pederson brought Philly to the playoffs three times in his five seasons with the team and is just three years removed from a Super Bowl title.
But for owner Jeffrey Lurie, the poor performance of Collapse
